Lumen - Smart Home App

Overview

Lumen makes lighting, climate, and sensors for the home. Their app had grown into a maze of settings, and they asked for a redesign that made everyday control effortless.

The Challenge

People wanted three things: turn on the lights, set the temperature, and check that the house is safe. Everything else was getting in the way, and setup alone took most new users over ten minutes.

What I Did

I led the redesign, from information architecture through motion and a custom icon set.

• Restructured the app around rooms and moments instead of devices.

• Designed a one-tap home screen with scenes like Morning and Movie Night.

• Drew a custom icon library of 120 icons for devices and states.

• Added smooth motion that shows changes as they happen in the house.

• Cut device setup from ten steps to three with a guided flow.

The Result

Setup time dropped by 65%, daily active use rose by 31%, and support tickets about “how do I…” fell by almost half.
